Designed as the signature communal building in a reclaimed Central Eastbank of the Willamette River, the building is an expression of the reality that Portland is a river settlement.  Like many urban ports the river was hardened and abused in the 20th century.  But now we are turning back to the river and restoring it.  We are turning back to craftsmanship, natural materials, and sustainable living.  The design creates a communal identity and supports the turning of hearts toward communal living.  The eye and spirit are focused forward and upward by the structure, which is inspired by millennia-old traditions of hand-built wood watercraft.
